Follow the trail of a ‘hungry,’ highly evolved Los Angelino, one who has been psychologically abused by patriarchal normalcy, social media addictions and superstitious stereotypes…

Sit back and watch the lengths to which she will go to take care of the one she loves, driven by a luscious, mad masochism that leads her to prostitute and betray the very essence of her magic; selling the deepest secrets of her species for base reward–money, intended to help her pretty, pretty lover boy become something more than what he is, even though he’ll never be as complex, as tender or as intelligent as the protagonist herself.
In some ways, this is an examination of the female condition- a hazy, PTSD-infused willingness to subjugate. She feels the gnawing need to serve another- the pleasure of feeding another. It’s a sexually maternal tale, almost…

Can she escape the Hardcore Folklore which has pushed her Self Realization behind a veil of socially-constructed reality?

Moist (03:44 min)

Film Language: English

How do we define the line between men and nature? Considering the fact that all things found on earth have started out as natural elements, it is unlikely to assume that mankind have at any point contribute to the development of original formation. However, having said that, it is impossible to ignore mankind’s directive narrative to world’s natural sources through the history, to the point where we can no longer see a clear difference
between what is designed by nature and what isn’t.
The elements we used for the video such as designed marble stone, fur coat, artificial waterfall etc, were clearly our way to illuminate men intervention within natural space as noted above, threatened by natural disasters such as fire and lava, simply to remind nature’s fury and it’s unattainable, wild consuming power.

Eyes (13:00 min)

Director: Maria Laura Moraci

Story for an empty theatre (57:00 min)

Director: Aleksandr Balagura , Cesare Bedogne

Film Language: Italian + English subtitles

“Story for an empty theatre”, an introduction by Venanzio del Mare

This film narrates an intense story of love, disease and death, inspired by the autobiographical novel “Beyond the Blue”, by the Italian photographer and writer Cesare Bedognè.
The novel is at the basis of the theatrical performance of the same name which, together with the writer’s photographs, was the first material on which this film was created. In this work still photographs, classical music, theatrical choreographies and dance belonging to the Japanese Butoh’s tradition, lyrical prose, diary fragments and poems merge cinematographically, through the editing by the Russian director Aleksandr Balagura, with shots taken both in a deserted Sanatorium of the Italian Alps, the place of the writer’s past, and in the Greek island of Lesvos, the place of his present.
As the book on which it is based, the film seems to wander freely in time, attempting to be more faithful to the intrinsically poetic and diachronic flow of memory rather than to the artificial linearity of conventional narration. The space of this film is thus the space of consciousness, a continuum which dilates, in one of the very last shots, into a dreamlike meditation on death, when the theatre’s stage slowly dissolves into the interior of the Sanatorium’s ruined church, and the white female character weaving together in a pattern of Japanese theatre the various shots of the film, seems to leave behind her own body and leaves the scene. Before the crumbling altar only a drifting plastic bag remains, stirred by the wind.
This is a film constructed on words where images (both still and moving) do not play a merely descriptive role, but rather open a parallel poetical path. It is thus accomplished, through a polysemic correlation between word and image, what Belá Balázs believed to be one of the most intriguing possibilities of poetical expression pertaining to cinematic language. Through this filmic journey we are also led to the inner depths of the photographic image, the very stuff cinema is made of. Gelatin silver pictures merge in this film with cinematic shots, abandoning their seemingly static form: they dissolve or slowly take shape, as if still under the action of a developer in the darkroom, gradually revealing different layers of reality.
The same pictures return rhythmically, in the film, and as the story unfolds they produce always diverse suggestions and meaning, in the continuously
changeable and renewed flow of memory. In quite a similar manner, the actress seems to react to both the words from the book and Bach’s music, wandering freely inside and outside the stage, in a silent dialogue with the impalpable beings that from time to time seem to inhabit her, on the Greek shores, in a deserted church or in the old Sanatorium’s haunting rooms – a landscape of Absence – emptiness submerged by a sense of waiting, that counterpoints and at the same time reverberates the everlasting voice of the sea.

The dispensation of life and death (03:22 min)

Director: Roberto Gallina, Fabio Gallina

Film Language: English

The video shows sadistic people sitting at a table where alongside the main course is a girl, clearly terrified. With them there is a serial killer who, like a malicious presenter, entertains the audience of this aristocratic lounge. A waiter keeps resupplying the table in front of these bored spectators and, while they are eating, the food acquires more and more a macabre connotation. Rapid flashbacks, like dreamlike abstractions of introspection, depict their vices in their own private context touching religion, secret socities and perversions. The hunger of the nobles is insatiable, they eventually start blaming each other in front of the gleeful eyes of the serial killer. The last abstraction is his own, which brings him back to reality and what is currently happening: he is at the window and he is looking with desire at a girl as she strolls in the street, the one previously linked to his imaginary dream.

The serial killer is nothing more than a product, brought to the excess by our society. He represents the true choice that it (the society) induces: to abide by oneself or to live by moring according to ethical canons. In his mind the need for exaggeration is represented throught the control he exercises on the victim. He sees his personality as the demanding nobles he meets, characters with a dark and scary private life. In the final he is back to reality, leaving him to the most disturbing of its questions: should he indulge in his nature?

Me Too – Fuck You – It’s time for action (1:20 h)

Director: Jenny Hsia, Paul Ruven

ME TOO – FUCK YOU – IT’S TIME FOR ACTION “swipes” (like you do on your smartphone or iPad) between several stories of young and older women who think time’s up, we have to act against sexual abuse. The main storyline is about a Chinese woman who helps loyal other women to finally get justice from unpunished abusers, inspired by Hitchcock’s “Strangers on a train” (for a perfect alibi) and Michael Mann’s “Collateral” (take a cab to justice).

The first feature that lead actress Jenny Hsia (co) directed (with Paul Ruven). Her parents emigrated from communist China to the Netherlands. Trained as an actress at the Lee Strasberg Institute (NYC). Jenny Hsia: “#MeToo and Time’s Up inspired. It’s about time we do something about sexual harassment. Filmmakers too can tell stories and start discussions. ”

Emmy nominated producer Paul Ruven was twice selected for Berlin. Every movie he directs is different cinema adventure. Paul Ruven: ” We shot a month before #MeToo started. An urgent dilemma: How to act against sexual abusers? In the world 1 in every 3 women and 1 in every 6 men suffered sexual abuse as children. Strong women stand up.”

Director of “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” Martin McDonagh couldn’t have said it better at the BAFTA’s 2018 :”It is a hopeful movie but also angry, and sometimes an angry movie is the only way to change something.”
